Today, I am going to be teaching you how to convert PDF to MIDI with ScanScore.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sure there are sources that help you scan PDF to MIDI online. But these free or low-cost methods often lead the user to a result that is less than ideal and is riddled with mistakes. There are PDF to MIDI apps, but once again, the research in OMR and quality just isn\u2019t there. ScanScore 2 is a program that can scan, edit, transpose, digitize, and export your music to musicXML\u2019s. There are three options when it comes to ScanScore:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>ScanScore Melody: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This allows you to scan one-line pieces.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>ScanScore Ensemble: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gives you up to 4-lines of scanning and digitizing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>ScanScore Professional: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Offers unlimited staves and instruments.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ScanScore melody is a favorite among elementary music educators, who only usually need to digitize a single line of vocal music or music for the recorder. ScanScore ensemble is most often used by choral directors and those in string quartets. ScanScore professional is a favorite among arrangers and directors of large ensembles because there are no limitations. Now that you know what ScanScore is all about, you can pick out the product you need!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Pro-Tip: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t forget about our free app that compliments the software. It\u2019s called ScanScore Capture, and you can find it on both the App store as well as the Google Play Store!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Step by Step Process<\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><b>Step 1: The \u201cPDF\u201d part of PDF to MIDI<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first step is to pick out your PDF. Sounds simple, but it\u2019s actually not! In order to accurately scan music, ScanScore needs a high-quality PDF. Let me show you an example.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, I decided to import the piece Etude 1 by Lukas Florczak. I downloaded it from IMSLP. Here is the quality of music that I chose:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-33705 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/scan-score.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/etude1.png\" alt=\"e\" width=\"819\" height=\"566\" srcset=\"https:\/\/scan-score.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/etude1.png 819w, https:\/\/scan-score.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/etude1-300x207.png 300w, https:\/\/scan-score.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/etude1-768x531.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 819px) 100vw, 819px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Notice how dark the ink is, and how it was created with notation software like Sibelius or notion. There are no coffee stains, light notes, or other unclear markings. When you are looking at your PDFs, make sure they are high-quality. They don\u2019t have to be perfect, but the better they are, the less work you\u2019ll have to do later. And who doesn\u2019t want to save time?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Step 2: Importing<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before we get to importing, make sure you save your file in a place where you can find it! What I like to do is make a folder just for PDFs and ScanScore digitizations. I labeled the folder\u00a0 \u201cScanScore Scores\u201d. After this, I save my piece in an easy-to-find way. You can choose whatever method works for you. I prefer \u201cPiece_Composer_Instrument\u201d, so my file was saved as \u201cEtude1_Florczak_Flute\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now that we are all organized, it\u2019s time to start the import process. Go ahead and open up ScanScore on your computer. You\u2019ll see the main buttons in the middle of the screen.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-33538\" src=\"https:\/\/scan-score.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/importfromapp-1-300x56.png\" alt=\"h\" width=\"300\" height=\"56\" srcset=\"https:\/\/scan-score.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/importfromapp-1-300x56.png 300w, https:\/\/scan-score.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/importfromapp-1.png 664w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019ll be using the second button, Import Image\/ PDF file (s). You can also go to the lefthand side of the ScanScore screen, and choose this option from the dropdown. The third option in the file dropdown also says, Import Image\/ PDF file(s). Either way works, it just all depends on your preference!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a matter of seconds, your score will be imported and digitized. On the left is the original, and on the right is the new version.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-58792 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/scan-score.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/EtudeScanScore.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"901\" srcset=\"https:\/\/scan-score.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/EtudeScanScore.jpg 1920w, https:\/\/scan-score.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/EtudeScanScore-300x141.jpg 300w, https:\/\/scan-score.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/EtudeScanScore-1024x481.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/scan-score.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/EtudeScanScore-768x360.jpg 768w, https:\/\/scan-score.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/EtudeScanScore-1536x721.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Step 3: Editing<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because no OMR is perfect, we need to enlist the help of our editing tools. While you might be thinking \u201cUgh, there might be mistakes?\u201d I want to remind you of how much time scanning software will save you in the long run. Importing an etude in ScanScore saved me inputting over 100 notes. So, how do we edit?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What looks like happened is a common OMR error. ScanScore missed the time signature changes, which caused the blue error lines to show up. So, let\u2019s check out the toolbar.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To edit inside of ScanScore, use the intuitive icons. With each icon you click, a new sub-toolbar will show up. Here is an example of some of the toolbars open:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-33709 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/scan-score.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Tb-1024x263.png\" alt=\"j\" width=\"1024\" height=\"263\" srcset=\"https:\/\/scan-score.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Tb-1024x263.png 1024w, https:\/\/scan-score.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Tb-300x77.png 300w, https:\/\/scan-score.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Tb-768x197.png 768w, https:\/\/scan-score.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Tb.png 1326w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can also edit pitches by either drawing a box around the item (and the arrow keys) or by using the mouse and your arrow keys. The same goes for adjusting rhythms. Just drag and click, and select the rhythmic value you need to change it to.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019re almost done! All that is left to do is to playback and save!<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Step 4: Playback and Save<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The playback tools that you can see above are really simple to use. The order of the buttons is: Play, stop and rewind. I love the MIDI playback features in ScanScore because it helps me edit the score for mistakes without having to scrutinize the score with my glasses on. After you\u2019re done, remember to hit File&gt; Save.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ScanScore\u2019s Mixer: A Helpful Extra<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Did you know that ScanScore has an extra? I recently learned that you can change the MIDI sound that plays back, too! ScanScore 1 used to have only the option of playing back with a MIDI piano sound. But ScanScore 2\u2019s sounds are much more expansive. Here\u2019s how to use the mixer and how to change the MIDI sound type:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Simply go to the toolbar, and click on the upper left button that has the cartoon mixer. Click on it, and you should see this open up:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-33711 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/scan-score.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Mixer-1024x481.png\" alt=\"h\" width=\"1024\" height=\"481\" srcset=\"https:\/\/scan-score.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Mixer-1024x481.png 1024w, https:\/\/scan-score.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Mixer-300x141.png 300w, https:\/\/scan-score.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Mixer-768x360.png 768w, https:\/\/scan-score.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Mixer.png 1110w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now you can pan, transpose, and change your instrument to one of the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Woodwinds<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brass<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Guitars<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Strings<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Percussion<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Singers<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Synth lead<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Synth FX<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Synth Pad<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Or Exotic<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can even add more than one instrument, as well as mute or solo different lines. I just discovered this tool, and I have to say, I am in love with it!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PDF to MIDI: Conclusion<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are the steps to convert a PDF to MIDI one more time:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Step 1<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: The \u201cPDF\u201d part of PDF to MIDI\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Choose and save a high-quality PDF of the sheet music you would like to digitize.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Step 2:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Importing<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Find and import the PDF document.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Step 3:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Editing<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Compare the two versions of the music. Use the toolbar to correct any mistakes!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Step 4: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Playback and Save<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use the MIDI playback to hear the score.
