Start Tips

Import

Here are some tips. We recommend the Picture & PDF Import. But we also have a reworked mobile solution:

  • Our ScanScore Scanner app makes it super-easy for you to scan music on the go, wherever you are. And this app is available free-of-charge from Google Play and the iOS App Store. (Earlier "ScanScore Capture" is not available anymore.)

When you’re using the app, you’ll want to create as clear a scan image as possible to get the best results from the ScanScore software. To achieve this, try to ensure the sheet music is well-lit and take the scan at a parallel, even angle. Use the flash and the internal black / white filter of the mobile app.

Scan the QR code with the mobile app.  You can find it in the Preferences. Here you can also increase the master volume if you activate the supplied soundfont in the installation path. You can also use your own soundfonts!

In the Prescan Window, you can set parameters such as contrast.  The automatic value is recommended for PDF import, for mobile app import the internal filter is usually sufficient, but in some cases readjustment is useful!

Correction

Depending on the input, not every scan is perfect! Software is there to use it.

After you have scanned your scores and made all the necessary corrections, you can perform a final check using the playback function. Simply compare the original with the scanned score and then correct the remaining errors. Use menus, toolbars and shortcuts to edit your score, for example draw a rectangle around notes and press "3" to turn them into triplets.

Golden Rule: First Structure, then Detail!
Insert Barlines and check Time Signatures for every bar first

Blue lines indicate that you need to check the note values.
Green lines help you and automatically fill up elements in voice layers!

Text Types & Anchoring

ScanScore also recognizes texts and anchors them according to their text type. This is very important for the MusicXML export, so always check the anchoring! Drag the elements with pressed Ctrl / Cmd key to change the anchoring and double-click to edit.

With the Properties in the Window Menu (Alt / Option + P) you can see the text type and change it. The font size of an individual text element can also be edited here.

You can set the font and size for an entire text type with one click in the Text Tab of the Preferences in the Options Menu

Chords and Lyrics

Lyrics are always placed below the system. Chords above the system. In the case of closely written scores, it can happen that a chord is recognized as the lyrics of the staff above. Double-click to open either the chord window or, in the case of a lyrics element, only the normal editing.

Then click on the right and select “Change To -> Chord Symbol” at the bottom. If necessary, change the anchoring as described above.

When transposing your score, it is very important that the chords are also marked as chord symbols so that they are also transposed!
